El Rinconcillo (Seville)

The house of old school tapas

White prawns from Huelva

El Rinconcillo is perhaps the most iconic tapas bar in Seville. Open since 1670, it is the oldest tapas bar in the city. It does traditional regional tapas but it also has a sit-down restaurant space that serves bigger plates with a bigger menu. It is one of the most popular dining spots and was recommended in the Michelin guide. The menu covers mostly the typical tapas dishes you will see elsewhere, along with a daily blackboard that offers seasonal dishes, based on if El Rinconcillo managed to source any special fresh ingredients on the day.

I ordered mostly from the daily special board, along with a few classic tapas from its standard menu. The Iberico ham omelet was done expertly, the yolk was still very running and the ham worked like a wonderful savoury seasoning, with a touch of dryness and smokiness. The best dish of the meal had to be some large clams cooked in a pot of tomato and seafood stock, the clams had the perfect chewy texture and delivered a lovely refreshing taste from the sea, I could not fault it at all. Another wonderful dish was the Iberico sirloin, it was tender and finely seasoned, it tasted almost like a beefsteak thanks to its bold tasting flavour from the open fire grilling.

I understand why El Ronconcillo is such a long-lasting, iconic place now. The food was great, but what makes this place really special is its historical decor with really down to earth, warm service from the staff. Our waiter on the day was super charming, even when he couldn't speak much English, he kept smiling and using hand signals, I really value when waiter go the extra mile to make their customers happy so credit to him. If you ever visit Seville and only got limited time, be sure to save time to visit this famous El Rinconcillo to experience what tapas culture is all about.
