Gold Mine has somewhat gained a reputation of serving the best traditional Cantonese roasted duck in London. The classic Chinese restaurant in Bayswater is loved by the local Chinese communities for its old-school Cantonese cuisine, things that you are unlikely to find in your local Chinese takeaways, such as salted fish & pork cooked in a clay pot and lamb stew with tofu sheets. The restaurant was doing a decent trade over lockdown, especially with its infamous roasted duck, but for me, many Chinese dishes lose their quality after traveling so I always prefer to dine in.

The steam chicken was cooked to perfection, the meat was very tender, and the excellently blended soy and spring onion seasoning sauce really uplifted the umami taste of the chicken. The slow-cooked pork belly cooked in a clay pot was another comforting dish, the meat was very moist and sliced to the perfect width, the mellow sweetness and earthiness from the taro worked well but I felt the taro could be cooked for a little longer to make it softer. The house special roasted duck was well executed as expected, the fat and meat ratio was perfect, full of flavours with a soft sweet five spices undertone. The duck at Gold Mine is for sure a step above any other Chinese restaurants nearby.

Goldmine turns out classic Cantonese dishes like you would find in Hong Kong. For sure, there are few British Chinese style dishes but the core offering without a doubt is the solid good quality, authentic Chinese dishes. Price is also very reasonable, with most dishes costing around £13 mark and its cheapest set menu which contain 5 courses would only set you back £22 per person. Do pay a visit for a taste of traditional Chinese cuisine, not many other places in London does it better at a similar price.
