Paco Meralgo

Lively Catalan seafood bar

Open prawn omelet

The Catalan region has a stunning seacoast facing the Mediterranean Sea, and its Costa Brava seafront is responsible for some of the finest seafood you can get. Much of the seafood you can find in Barcelona would come from the Med and when seafood is fresh, usually the best method to enjoy is the simple, classic way, and that is what Paco Meralgo is all about. The seafood tapas bar serves a wide range of seafood dishes, usually in either raw form, grilled, or deep-fried. All the seating are bar stalls style and the best place to sit is without a doubt the bar counter facing the opening kitchen where you can see the chefs in action.

Palamos red prawns

The bake spider crab had a good mixture of both white and brown meat, very rich and an overwhelmingly strong umami taste, just how I like it. The grilled red prawns was cooked to the perfect level, the prawn had a sweet melting texture with just a hint of smokiness, amazingly fresh. It was my first time trying the grilled fresh sea cucumber and the texture felt like a cross between razor clam and jellyfish, very enjoyable but it was over seasoned. You can't go wrong with baby squid with beans in Spain and Paco Meralgo's version was lovely indeed, tender sauteed squid with creamy beans, the prefect combination.

Paco Meralgo is for sure a great, lively seafood bar, it was casual and simple, with the use of great fresh seafood ingredients. The restaurant showcased when you have good quality seafood, simplicity is all you need to turn it into something truly enjoyable. Don't expect any fireworks or unusual element in this seafood bar, but do expect great Spanish style seafood. If you enjoy seafood in a sharing manner, this place is a great choice whenever you pay a visit to Barcelona.
