A funky french tasting journey
|
Pumpkin, gnocchi, white truffle, squid |
Sketch is one of the handfuls of 3 Michelin-starred restaurants in London. The modern French restaurant is always more than just a restaurant. From the funky staircase leading to the dining room to the Pop-Art like grand dining room itself, dining at Sketch is always going to be a special experience, not to mention the super slick service. This is my 3rd visit to Sketch, I have experienced its set lunch menu as well as the a la carte menu, so it was only fitting for me to go for the tasting menu for a full-on Sketch experience.

Scottish scallops, oranges, turnips, artichokes |

Poached and grilled seabass, seaweed, cheddar |
Unlike its a la carte, most of the dishes came in one or 2 dishes per course so it seems much more simple and more straightforward. The seabass cooked in 2 ways, poached and grilled was excellent. The fish was buttery and well seasoned, and the shellfish sauce offered so much umami. The pumpkin gnocchi with squid was a fun combo, the sweet and savory taste, with a hint of smoke, turned out to be very enjoyable. The white truffle on top also worked well with all the elements. The final main course was a pretty average dish, it was deer saddle thinly sliced, swimming in a pool of meat and berries sauce. It felt like a Sunday roast dish instead of a 3 Michelin-starred restaurant, the flavour was also overly sweet so I could hardly taste the meat itself.

Pierre Gagnaire's grand dessert selection |
I personally found the a la carte to be more enjoyable than the tasting menu, as you actually get to sample more dishes with a link between them all. In fact, Sketch is pricing its a la carte menu as more expensive than its tasting menu, which I think totally makes sense. Having said that, for me going to Sketch is always more than just the food alone. You will be well looked after in such a special place, so it is always a good venue for a very special occasion such as a birthday treat.
