Old Butchers

Hidden seafood heaven

Fruits de mer

I love the Cotswolds, I usually travel there a few times a year for holiday, and one of my favourite thing to do at the Cotswolds is to discover great hidden gems. This time, I stopped by Stow on the Wold, right in the heart of the Cotswolds countryside and dined at the Old Butchers. The interesting thing about this place is that it is actually a family-run seafood restaurant and wine bar, you won't find much meat on the menu, it is all about fresh seafood from around the UK. The Old Butchers is one of the most popular restaurants in Stow on the Wold, it was buzzing with locals on my visit while the street on the outside is totally empty.

In the classic seafood fashion, we opted for a fruits de mer as a sharing starter. The oyster was really something, it was so fresh with a wonderful moist meaty texture. The Cornish lobster was packed with refreshing sweetness, the flesh was tender, meaty and worked like a treat with the house mayonnaise. You can really taste the high quality of the lobster which not even Burger & Lobster can rival. I was in love with the Cornish sole main, cooked with butter with the capers acted as a lovely seasoning, it had such a great balance of flavours and the croutons added a nice touch of crispiness to round off a simple, but yet well-executed fish dish.

All in all, it was a lovely seafood dinner, the Old Butchers doesn't really do anything fancy or out of the box, instead, you are getting proper well-cooked seafood, using top quality ingredients. It was an extremely busy night so the service was a little slow, but overall it was decent enough and the waits were well worth it. I can see why the local loves this place and is safe to assume that the Old Butchers is the best restaurant in Stow on the Wold.
