Iconic Viennese restaurant
Schnitzel |
When you are in Vienna, one thing that you will see everywhere is the schnitzel, Austrian's national dish: deep fried in meat and usually done using veal or pork meat. Figlmüller is the granddaddy of the dish and one of the most iconic restaurants in the city. These days, it is now a very successful business with many restaurants across the nation. I visited the flagship Figlmüller at Wollzeile for my visit, which is the very first restaurant of the business and only offers limited dishes, but all are the classics that you would want to go for if you really want to experience authentic Austrian cuisine.

One thing that I really got high praise for was the potato salad, it looked pretty standard visually but the texture of the potato was top notch, very soft and buttery. The dressing contained chives with a finely balanced of onions and vinegar, pure joy! According to its website, the average schnitzel measures roughly thirty centimeters. This is music to my ear. It was very impressive looking when it arrives on the table, and tasted delicious, it wasn't greasy at all, crispy with moist meat in the center, which worked so well with the salads when eaten together. The chicken cordon bleu was a little less impressed, on the other hand, it was a touch dry but the chess and ham filling was excellent and offered bags of savory flavors to the lightly seasoned chicken meat.

The meal was enjoyable, and the atmosphere was lovely. The restaurant space was small and cozy, but it was buzzing with white wine flowing around and well-dressed waiters really looking after everyone. All the dishes at Figlmüller looked pretty standard from the presentation point of view, but they were comforting food at its best. Great taste and served in a monster portion, what is not to love? This place is far from a tourist trap, it is an iconic landmark of Vienna, and a meal at Figlmüller is a must if you want a slice of the Viennese experience.
