Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice Taipei

Braised pork rice in its full glory

Braised pork belly by Jin Feng

When you visit Taiwan, besides the national dish beef noodles, braised pork rice is also a must try. I got nothing but love for the comforting rice dish, and it is such a shame that not many places does it in London. The braised pork element is basically minced pork, marinated in soy, rice wine, garlic, and spices. Jin Feng is a classic street stall/restaurant in Tapei, and perhaps the most famous one for Taiwanese braised pork, highly recommended by the locals.

The menu is very short, and most are pork based dishes. The braised tofu was decent but nothing special. The main event of braised pork rice was so comforting, the pork marinate was well made, good depth of umami taste, as well as a hint of sweetness undertone. and what made it even better was the fact it cost only £1 for a small bowl! The braised pork belly had a melting texture, I really enjoyed the sweet and salty taste of the sauce, which would work wonderfully with a bowl of rice.

Jin Feng was casual dining at its best, it had the most basic service and the setting is as dated and informal as you can get, but the food quality is there without a doubt. The amazing thing about Jin Feng is that everything is so cheap, with no dish cost more than the £1.50 mark. This is simply value for money. Just keep in mind this place is best for a fast food experience as you would easily be done within the 15 mins from sitting down to getting ready to pay the bill.
