45 Jermyn St

Old school charm in the heart of London

Champagne Risotto, white truffle

Located just behind Fortnum and Mason in Mayfair, 45 Jermyn Street is an upmarket restaurant in the mood of a modern brasserie. The restaurant has a reputation for serving high-quality game dishes and in true Mayfair fashion: caviar. The menu is big, you have 15 choices for the main course alone. There are some old school classic dishes on the menu, as well as some international dishes. Seeing a menu that has both Mexican tacos and Beef Wellington at the same time is really puzzling for me, but I guess when you are located at one of the busiest tourist districts in London, you need to be mindful to have something for everyone. The big question for me was, can the kitchen pull it off.

Tagliatelle with 24 Month Parmesan, white truffle
Highland Venison Loin and Braised Shoulder, Beetroot

To start off the meal in true fashion, I opted for caviar which was served with a very buttery and creamy omelet on the side. The caviar had such a robust umami taste, so the richness of the omelet, along with the sour cream, worked well as a contrast for the palate. Up next, it was a risotto dish cooked in a creamy champagne sauce. The risotto was cooked to the perfect temperature, well seasoned and the addition of white truffle offered such a lovely earthy and nutty tone to the whole dish. The lobster spaghetti was cooked tableside, and it contained a good amount of brandy. It had an intense depth of seafood aroma, the tomato and artichoke offered a chunky texture. The quality of the lobster was high too, very moist and finely seasoned, it was really enjoyable.

All the dishes I sampled on the night were all classic European dishes, and I got to say everything I have tasted on the day was truly wonderful. It is no easy to get classic dishes right but 45 Jermyn Street has done a fine job of it. The tableside serving of some of the dishes also added a lovely drama element and our server of the day was lovely, while she was far from slick or perfect, she served us with a big smile and very engaging. If you enjoy old school charm and classic European cooking, this restaurant is not a bad shout at all.
