China Tang Dorchester

Classy traditional Cantonese banquet

Suckling pig bao

Located in London Dorchester, China Tang has long been my to-go restaurant when I seek classic Cantonese food at the more premium end. You won't get creativity or any stunning visual pictures of dishes for your social media. But what they deliver is a great comforting, traditional Cantonese taste that I have nothing but love for. For my 19th visit, I went up a notch and hosted a dinner party in its private dining room, and ordered a traditional Cantonese banquet menu, 10 courses in sharing style.

Stir fry scallops and asparagus

Steamed turbot with sliced pork and preserved vegetables

Slow-cooked goose feet with mushrooms

This was my second time trying China Tang's roasted suckling pig, and it was as good as a suckling pig can be for me. The spices and salt marinated were spot on, the skin was thin and crispy, and the meat was remarkably moist. The steamed turbot was another outstanding dish, the cooking of the fish was perfect, with the meat falling off the bone effortlessly. The soy seasoning, together with picked vegetables and sliced pork added a lovely depth of flavour, it was sensational. The shrimp fried rice was cooked with loaded with plenty of shrimp roe, which delivered a lovely balancing umami taste.

Chicken and mushrooms in truffle sauce

Triple shrimps fried rice

Mango cream pudding

When you want to host a classic yet classy Cantonese banquet, China Tang is the place for sure. The kitchen is fully capable of turning out true classic dishes you would find in Hong Kong, and done in a very refined manner with no gimmicks at all. The service also matches the 5-star hotel level, you are paying a premium, but you are also getting a 5-star treatment from its decor, service to food. At the end of the day, there is a reason why this is one of my most visited restaurants in London.
