The Midland Grand Dining Room Restaurant

Grand French cuisine in style

Roast duck a l’orange

Thanks to inflation, it is a real struggle to find any places in London that can offer quality cooking under the 100-pound mark, and that is especially true for French cuisine. However, located inside the beautiful St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in King Cross, The Midland Grand Dining Room is fast becoming my go-to place for fine quality French food without breaking the bank. Headed up by the super talented Irish chef Patrick Powell. The French cuisine for me had a perfect balance of paying homepage to traditional, as well as a touch of modern refinement. For my second visit, I went for the big sharing plates to share among friends.

The BBQ monkfish tail was really monkfish in the finest form. The creamy and buttery taste of the fish worked like a treat with the sweetness of the lobster. The seafood umami note was so wonderful, to a level that I think as far as a pasta dish goes, I think this is the best I have encountered in the UK. The other showstopper main was the roasted duck a l' orange. It was roasted perfectly, the skin was crispy, and the fat was rendered properly. The sweet and sour tone of the duck sauce offered a great harmonious touch. The confit duck leg and duck sausage side also was excellent,  I was really impressed and couldn't find fault at all.

The Midland Grand Dining Room delivered yet another epic dinner. Quality local British ingredients cooked in a classy French way, not overly rich with a 'casual fine dining' feel about it. Of course, another plus about this place is that it has such a beautiful, elegant dining room, that is hard to match even from Michelin-starred restaurants. Along with 64 Goodge Street and Noble Rot (go to the Mayfair site!), these are my top 3 casual French restaurants in London right now.
