From the same people behind the much-loved Quality Chop House (Woodhead group), 64 Goodge Street is a brand-new French restaurant that does things completely different vs what the group is renowned for, which is British cuisine. Instead, 64 Goodge Street is all about looking into traditional French cuisine, then reformulating to something with a modern British touch, that might scare off hardcore traditionalists. The ALC menu is short, with less than 9 dishes to pick from between starters and mains, but this could be a good sign as it means the restaurant is able to master and focus on these dishes very well.

I feel I was correct, my starter of pan-roasted scallops was outstanding, and the scallop was cooked perfectly, soft and sweet just how I like it. The lentil absorbed all the lovely scallop and butter juice, it was a very satisfying start. The main of roasted pigeon was a stunning dish, again the meat was cooked perfectly, super tender and moist, that rich meaty earthy taste worked so well with the beetroot sauce which offered a hint of sweetness. The other main of lobster vol au vent was a proper winter dish for me, a really rich buttery taste combined with half lobster served along a crispy pastry, it was very fulfilling.

I am shocked 64 Goodge Street is a new restaurant (I went when the restaurant was only 2 weeks old). The quality of the cooking was outstanding and I had not experienced anything bad, while the service was pretty good as far as a new opening is concerned. The food might not be proper French, but the taste was adjusted to a level that I feel is much more welcomed to the British palate, and that is not a bad thing at all. Alongside Noble Rot and Midland Grand, I think these 3 are the stand-out French restaurants in London.
