The Yeatman

The height of Portuguese cuisine

Pigeon, foie gras, onion, artichoke

When you think of a restaurant with the perfect package, besides the food, the decor, the location, and the services also play a major factor. Located in Vila Nova de Gaia, where is famous for its port wine cellars, The Yeatman is a luxury 5 stars hotel, on top of a hill overlooking the beautiful River Duro and the city centre of Porto. Inside the hotel, it has one of the only five 2 Michelin starred restaurants in Portugal, with the same name. It is also part of Relais and Chateaux's rosters of hotel and restaurants, meaning it is considered a very special and prestige venue. Many travel websites rate The Yeatman as one of the very best restaurants in the country, offering creative, highly technical modern Portuguese cuisine. It offers a fixed tasting menu only, so if you are not a fan of such format, perhaps this is not the right place for you.

the meal kicked off with some playful canapes, all exceptionally crafted, I especially enjoyed the tuna sandwich, which contained a fine piece of fatty tuna, sandwiched with two layers of crispy seaweed. Out of the main dishes, I enjoyed the cuttlefish and pig the most. The cuttlefish was served in two courses, and the second serving of it that contained corn and rice was really special. The crunchiness of the rice, combined with tones of seafood umami thanks to the cuttlefish ink, I did not want it to end. The suckling pig was truly stunning, roasted in the traditional Bairrada style. The seasoning was spot on, the skin was as crispy as you could get, and the meat was so moist at the same time. the garnishes of coconut and mango also added a nice refreshing and sweet touch, it was so special and I would rate it as the best suckling pig I have ever encountered.

Without a doubt, The Yeatman really deserves its 2 Michelin stars status. The quality of the cooking was top-notch, with so much excitement at the same time. Every dishes gave me something to think about, from the presentation to the combination of ingredients. If I really got to be picky, I would say the dessert didn't match the quality of the savoury dishes, but this is not such a big deal for me. Besides the food, the service was really professional, truly reflect on how a 5 stars hotel should be. The decor of the venue is old school, I felt like I was eating in a dining hall inside a manor, overlooking the amazing views of the Duro River and Porto, you can not get better than in Porto. The Yeatman is one of those places I would love to return if I ever head back to the city, it is that good.
