Le Comptoir Robuchon

The legacy

Langoustine raviolis, Foie gras, Savoy cabbage

Since the upscale Michelin starred L'atelier de Joel Robuchon was shut down in Covent Garden last year, everyone expected that would be the end of chef Robuchon's empire in London as the great man himself passed away. However, in winter 2019, the company behind Robuchon's restaurant group launch a brand new restaurant: Le Comptoir Robuchon in Mayfair. It is much more casual in style but still has a luxury feel to it with a contemporary French brasserie mood. The menu is divided into two sessions, seasonal dishes that head chef Jeremy Page come up with based on prime ingredients, as well as a selection of classic Robuchon dishes that got the great Robuchon himself into the legendary status.

Pig’s trotter, Tarragon, Mustard
Quail, Foi gras, Truffle
Turbot, Caviar, Seaweed butter sauce

Our waiter suggested more than 1 starter or main per person as all the starters and mains are smaller than your standard a la carte portion, which is odd as some mains cost more than £40 already. The langoustine ravioli was solid, it was also stuffed with foie gras, it had a powerful umami taste with a mellow sweetness, really enjoyable. The turbot with caviar was style over substance, it was served lukewarm and the seaweed butter sauce lacked any depth, tasted like salted cream. The lamb chops were hugely disappointed, it was such a tiny dish and should not be charging £46. Everything tasted fine, the combination of the ingredients were well matched, but when paying such a high cost, I need it to be exceptional, not just fine.

Lamb chops, Aubergine, Comté
Rum Baba, Bourbon & Vanilla cream
Chocolate souffle, Whiskey

I have eaten two times at L'atelier de Joel Robuchon and found both times to be average. It was no different from Le Comptoir Robuchon. It was a lot less formal, but the price remained sky-high, and the cooking quality overall was great, but hardly anything special. Le Comptoir Robuchon is based in Mayfair, which is flooded with plenty of fine dining French restaurants, and I got to say there are many places that are just a notch or two better than Le Comptoir Robuchon.
