Casa Julián

 Txuleta kingdom

Casa Julián

Casa Julian is a little family fun steak restaurant in the Southern part of the Basque Country in Spain. There are plenty of amazing steak restaurants within San Sebastian so to travel an extra mile out of town, it has to be a very special reason for me. Located in a small town called Tolosa, which takes 40 mins train ride from San Sebastian, Casa Julian is highly regarded as one of the finest steak houses in the world. The restaurant sources old-aged dairy cows from the region, before slow grilling using its in-house bespoke device. Unlike the high heat blasting method which most places would cook steak normally.

Before the main event, I got the chance to sample some wonderful Iberico ham which was cured in-house. Nutty and buttery with a bold savory taste, it was simply faultless. The 1.3kg Txuleta rib steak was seasoned to perfection, and the surface of the steak had such a lovely smokiness aroma. The fattiness of the steak spread evenly and the meat was tender with an overwhelming rich meaty taste. Casa Julian's steak was not as moist as the Bar Nestor version but the intense beefy flavour was second to none thanks to its very unique method of meat sourcing, as well as its slow cooking method.

For those who enjoy wagyu-style steak or prefer steak that is super tender, Casa Julian might not be the place for you. However, for those who enjoy their steak with bold meaty savoury taste, then a special trip to Casa Julian is just what you need as I have yet to encounter steak with such powerful taste. I do prefer Bar Nestor's version cooking method more as it gives a lovely juicy mouth-fill, but Casa Julian gave me indeed a very unique beef tasting experience.
