Timeless classic Cantonese cuisine
Slow cooked wagyu beef cheeks |
There are not great numbers of classic Chinese restaurants in the UK and a quality one is close to none-exist. Located inside The Dorchester Hotel, China Tang London is one of the few restaurants in London that champion authentic Chinese cuisines, specializing in the Canton region. I have been to China Tang a good number of times now, as I really enjoy its classic approach, no fancy or modern element, just good old fashioned, authentic cooking, using good quality ingredients. Besides its long a la carte menu, the restaurant also offers a mini chef's special menu, offering new dishes developed by the head chef.

I kicked off the meal with a bang, the showstopping slow cooked wagyu beef cheek. The beef had such a lovely melting sensation, it offered so much umami tastes and the yellow bean sauce really enhanced the overall flavour of the dish. You can't get more old school than the pork patty with salted fishes dish, a popular dish from Hong Kong. The China Tang's version is just the same you would be able to find back in Hong Kong, well seasoned, with the use of ginger added a touch sharpness which balance off the saltiness brilliantly. The stir fry pigeon with yum was an interesting dish, I enjoyed the smooth texture of the black fungus and the sweetness of the yum, which worked well with the mild taste of the lean pigeon.

As expected, China Tang London delivered another classic Cantonese meal at a top level. Most of the dishes I had on the night offered familiar Chinese flavours. The presentation might look average, but every dishes were done faultlessly at the same time. The service was excellent, just like in the past. You might be worried about the cost to dine at China Tang, considering it is inside one of the luxuries hotels in the world. However, when you consider a whole duck is at around £60, and most meat, vegetables, and rice dishes at around the £20 mark, you can order smartly to get great value from dining at China Tang, that is for sure.
