Two Lights

American in East London

Crayfish Boil, Jersey Royals, Chorizo, Corn

Located in Hoxton, Two Lights is an American inspired modern restaurant by The Clove Club group. The Clove Club is one of the most regarded restaurants in London, and gaining a spot in the World 50 Best list from Restaurant Magazine is an amazing achievement, so naturally, the expectation is big on the groups' other restaurants. Two Lights is a very different beast compared to The Clove Club, is even more casual with spaces reserved for walk-ins. The menu is a la carte with no tasting menu, focusing on modern American cuisine. As someone who has little knowledge of American food, I was really excited to see what Two Lights is all about.

Organic Raw Vegetables, Anchovy & Summer Herb Dip
Caprese Salad of Tomato, Watermelon & Torn Burrata
Smoked Sea Trout, Aguachile, Berries & Cucumber

I kicked off with some small plates as starters and shared with the whole table. I was in love with the anchovy and summer herb dip, really bold in taste but extremely refreshing at the same time, it looked simple but I am sure much work has gone into it to create such an impactful dip, which was perfect with some crunchy raw vegetables. The main of crayfish looked amazing visually but the taste was fairly average. The seasoning was lacking and the quality of the crayfish was not to the level I was hoping for, it lacked the umami aroma and sweetness you would normally get from fresh crayfishes. However, the fried chicken was heavenly, the batter mixed was perfect, light but packed with plenty of flavours, and so crispy at the same time. It was easily the best-fried chicken I have ever come across in London.
Buttermilk Fried Chicken & Biscuits
Grilled Pork Belly, Fine Beans, Bacon & Mustard
Roasted Aylesbury Duck, Girolles, Coco Beans & Blackcurrants

Apart from the crayfish, the overall quality of the meal was really great, while I am sure it is not authentic American food, just from taste alone Two Lights is the real deal. The cooking style was easy to understand and is something not that common you would see elsewhere in London. All the starters cost less than £10 and mains under £20, which is great value for money for what you are getting. The service was solid and the decor of the restaurant is fantastic, really chill and totally fit into the East London vibe. For any fried chicken lovers, you really got to pop down to Two Lights.
