Soulless Hotel dining
Raw oysters |
Kimpton Fitzroy London is a really posh and fancy 5 stars hotel next to Russell Square. A luxury hotel deserves a top restaurant and Neptune is the answer to that. The stylish and classy dining room, along with an oyster bar has money signs written all over it. However, the price is actually pretty reasonable for a 5 stars hotel. Most starters are around the £10 mark, with all the mains cost under £25, apart from the steaks. The chef behind Neptune is Brett Redman, who is also behind the casual Japanese yakitori joint Jidori and British restaurant Elliot's Cafe. Therefore, the expectation for Neptune was rather high for me as I had a really enjoyable meal at Elliot's Cafe in the past.

For starter, we had the restaurant signature oyster, at £3 a pop per oyster. The oyster was decent enough in both size and freshness, but for me, there are plenty of places that serve similar quality at a lower price point. The market fish of the day was the roasted monkfish, served with brown shrimps and red pepper sauce. It was lukewarm when it arrived on to the table and the sauce was watery and was all over the dish, this really shouldn't happen for a fine dining restaurant. Much better was the ribeye steak, it was tender and well seasoned, a pretty decent piece of steak, but I hope the smoky aroma was a touch stronger.

I wasn't sure if I went to Neptune on an off day, the food didn't really impress me overall. The quality of the ingredients was there, just the chef execution was just a bit clumsy. I was expecting a lot more given the reputation of Neptune and is inside a 5 stars hotel no less. However, the shining light of the evening was the service, our waiter was really charming and warming, he really took great care of us. I just wished the food was the same!
