Value for money omakase in London

O taro, wagyu and caviar |
When you seek proper Japanese sushi done in the traditional authentic way, omakase is the way to go. The concept is similar to a western tasting menu, with the chef deciding what to offer you based on the best ingredients he or she could get hold of. Sushi on Jones from the USA picked on that concept with an 'American fast food' approach, with fast pace sushi done in omakase style, done within an hour. It has set up an overseas site in London, not far from Kingcross tube station inside a food court. Unlike its USA counterpart, the London site sticks to a more traditional approach, with well sourced seafood from all around the world.

Wagyu, yellow tail and truffle |
There are 2 omakase choices, 12 pieces of sushi or 20, which contain seafood sourced from the UK, as well as some rare fishes from Asia. There are some exceptional ingredients used even on the shorter menu, such as the Canadian giant shrimp, super sweet with a smooth and creamy texture, it had the right balance of umami taste and freshness, which worked well on sushi rice. The yellowtail with truffle was a winning combination, I enjoyed the meaty texture of the fish, which worked so well with the earthy profile of the truffle. The great ending was the Japanese A5 wagyu, lightly charred. The meat had a sensational melting texture, with a hint of smokiness uplifting the buttery taste of the beef.

Spanish O taro |
On top of the short omakase menu, I also added a few more supplements of luxury ingredients, such as caviar, abalone, and madai imported from Japan. So paying close to the £100 mark isn't actually too bad. There are for sure better sushi Japanese restaurants in London, but Sushi on Jones isn't at a sky high price, so is a great intro for anyone who is new to the classic omakase sushi concept.
