The Culpeper

East London gastropub

Pollock, Curried Mussel Sauce, Wilted Spinach & Coriander Oil

A good quality gastropub is not easy to find in London. There are many pubs out there that claim they are a gastropub offering top class British pub food, but very feel can actually deliver it. Around in East London, most people would think of The Marksman near Hackney as the top gastropub. However, having eaten there before, I think The Culpeper is just as good, if not better. The Culpeper is a 3 floors pub and its restaurant space offers a short but eye-catching menu, with some international influences but still staying true to British seasonal cooking.

Seabass Crudo, Grapes, Radish & Fennel Herb
Raw Chopped Beef, Sesame & Soya Dressing, Daikon

The seabass crudo was what summer is all about, the use of grapes and radish added crunchiness and sweetness, which worked perfectly with the raw fish. The less successful dish was the raw chopped Beef, I found the use of sesame and soy sauce was too aggregative, it totally dominated everything on the plate. The star of the meal was the lamb sirloin, it was cooked to perfection, really moist and packed with rich umami taste. The sweetbread almost added like butter which offered a lovely buttery taste, with the watercress delivered some lovely peppery tone, I got nothing but love for this wonderful plate of food.

Burrata, Swiss Chard, Broad Beans, Almonds & Sorrel
Welsh Lamb Sirloin, Sweetbread, Potato Rosti, Watercress & Tapenade

My meal at The Culpeper was very enjoyable, it was good to be back to sample its summer menu and got the chance to experience some great quality modern British pub food. I would rate the quality of cooking is as good as many
bistro and pubs out there across London but at a more affordable price, not to mention with a strong list of beer and cocktails too. Service on the day was also solid, nothing fancy or too casual. East London is lucky to have a great pub like The Culpeper.
