Wun's

Cantonese tearoom

Iberico char siu

Tea room at Soho has launched a few years ago, the upstairs space serves steam buns ad downstairs has a restaurant and bar serving Cantonese cuisine. However, it has all changed with the bun concept has moved to China Town, and both floors have been rebranded to Wun's Tearoom. A Chinese cocktail and restaurant den in the mood of classic Hong Kong dai pai dong. All the cocktails from the bar are made using Asian spirits only, such as Taiwanese whiskey and Japnese gin. The menu itself is fairly small, with a selection of skewers, clay pot rice and snacks, ideal with beer and cocktails.

Lamb and chicken skewers
XO bone marrow with fried mantau
Crispy tofu with white rice wine vinegar
Stir fry black bean scallops

Out of all the skewers, I enjoyed the pork belly the best, the smoky taste, along with the seasoning of sea salt and cumin made it extremely flavoursome, perfect with a long, floral cocktail. The sour plum braised duck was an interesting dish, it was sweet and sour on another dimeson. I enjoyed the fruity and salty profile of the sauce, it was a great summer dish, but my only problem was the duck meat was a little dry. The hero dish of the evening was the char siu, it had a great balance of meaty and fatty texture, moist and full of sweet savoury tastes. I also had another version of the char siu, which came in a clay pot with rice, it was just as wonderful as the rice absorbed all the richness of the honey glazed pork.

The meal at Wun's was not your typical Chinese cuisine experience in London, it had a mixture of Cantonese dishes, as well as Chinese street food items, things that you might be familiar with if you have taken a trip to Hong Kong. Drink-wise, personally they have done a good job in putting together an unusual and fun cocktail list. I really enjoy my grape and basil cocktail, which was so refreshing, with a hint of pleasant bitterness. Wun's is a cool joint if you are into fine quality cocktails with an Asian twist, the food is not half bad either, and make a great pairing with the food.
