Peking duck |
Tucked away on Hanway Place, Hakkasan might seem unassuming from the outside, but once you step inside, it reveals an ultra-modern and sleek atmosphere. The dark, moody lighting, beautifully carved wooden screens, and a mix of luxurious furnishings create an intimate setting. The menu is a carefully curated selection of modern Cantonese dishes that honor tradition while introducing innovative twists. I have been to Hakkasan a few times in the past and I found their strength is their signature dishes that bas been on the menu since they opened more than 20 years ago.

For my 6th visit, I opted for mostly the classic dishes of the house. The Peking duck is as good as anywhere else in London, the sugary crispy duck skin was heavenly, and it was interesting to see Hakkasan served in a creative way by using a thick pancake and crafted like canapes, every mouthful was a sensational experience. The char siu pork is a recent addition and I enjoyed it a lot. The meat was so tender and the sweet savoury marinate was on point and worked so well with the sharpness of the mustard. The charcoal-grilled silver cod with champagne and honey is a must-try. The cod is perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful, with just the right hint of sweetness from the honey glaze.

Despite Hakkasan losing its Michelin star in 2024, the food offering, at least judging from the dishes I have had, remained strong, and delivered on taste. These days, I am not too bothered about the star rating, as I found the guide is not the best judge in non-European cuisine. In a nutshell, the price might be sky-high, but dining at Hakkasan feels like stepping into a world where tradition meets sophistication. Every dish is crafted with precision and care, blending traditional flavors with modern techniques to create something truly unique.
