Cay Tre

Pho Joy

One of the most popular Vietnamese restaurants in Shoreditch, Cay Tre on Old Street serves some of the most authentic and freshest Vietnamese food that you can find in London. Like most other Vietnamese places in Shoreditch, the setting is in the mood of a traditional cafe style which is ideal for a quick fix or a casual dinner with friends. I walked in with a few friends without booking and luckily managed to get a table despite being pretty busy.

To start we ordered a shrimp roll dish to share, it was light, clean on the palate with the fresh shrimps and papaya. It also had a hint of sweetness with a silky texture, not a bad way to start off the dinner. For Main I had a Vietnamese classic: Pho. A soup noodle dish where the soup is cooked for extended hours using beef bone and other herbs. However I did it in style and went for the biggest pho on the menu, the special large combo which had beef steak, brisket, fatty flank, meatball, tendon and tripe all in one giant bowl of noodles!

Saigon pho

The Vietnamese way of nose to tail cooking was very interesting indeed, all the items inside the bowl was flavoursome having soaked up all the rich flavours from the beef soup. Both the tendon and tripe had a lovely smooth jelly texture while the fatty flank and brisket was very moist and savoury in taste. The noodles itself was soft and silky, the soup was full of wonderful rich herbal aromas, packed with flavours and was very enjoyable.

coconut milk & red curry

It was a great dinner overall, the food was fresh and full of lovely exotic aromas and at very affordable prices. Pho is a must try item here but if you are not a noodle fan, Cay Tre's menu also offer some other classics such as Vietnamese curry or crispy sea bass cooked in mango and fish sauces. Well worth a try if you are a fan of Vietnamese cuisines but without the time to fly to the other side of the planet.
