Tonic & Remedy

Freshness in Old Street

M by Montcalm

Tonic & Remedy is a newly launched restaurant inside the five star hotel 'M by Montcalm' by the Searcys group, who are specialists in private dining and bespoke events with venues including The Gherkin and Blenheim Palace. Headed up by Paul Welburn, former head chef at Michelin starred Rhodes W1 in the City, Tonic & Remedy championed itself using well sourced herbs and spices with a modern and creative touch in its cooking.

I took the 50% off soft launch deal and I was really impressed with what was on offer on the day.

crispy pig head and apple salad
smoked eel, jelly and scones
pea and wild garlic risotto, slow cooked duck egg
sea trout, asparagus, watercress

The starter of smoked eel in a jar was a fun and exciting dish, the eel salad and cold jelly was blended wonderfully, the flavour was powerful but not challenging with just a tiny hint of sweetness on the back notes, it made a perfect sandwich when paired with the salty scones. The main of Herdwick lamb showcased the star quality in Paul's cooking, the rump was really moist and finely seasoned and linked up nicely with all the garnishes, the visual was appealing and even better was the delightful aroma. It was such a well executed and constructed dish that it wouldn't look out of place in any Michelin restaurant in London.

roast Cumbrian chicken waldorf
lemongrass smoked sea bream, squid, cucumber ketchup

roast cod, shellfish casserole and fennel
Herdwick lamb, rump, belly & broccoli
banoffee sundae

Tonic & Remedy totally went beyond my expectations, so good that I decided to return again in less than a week. The cooking was excellent and the price is very affordable even if you're not using the 50% off discount, with starters costing about £7 and mains about £17, the cooking here is pretty special and I cannot think of a better restaurant in Old Street apart from The Clove ClubIt is refreshing to see Old Street has such a reasonable priced restaurant with good quality cooking in an informal but yet premium setting, a welcoming change.
