The Royal Oak

Top class gastropub

Dressed Crab, Blood Orange, Radicchio and Sorrel

I got to admit, without watching Masterchef the Professional, The Royal Oak would never come to my attention. Craig Johnston, who works at the Michelin starred gastropub is the winner of the 2017 edition and he seems like a real talent with some speculator dishes showcased on the TV show, one after another. Looking at the menu online from The Royal Oak's website, the menu appears to be modern British with a hint of European touch, what I really like is that it retains some classic British essence with items such as black pudding and pie on the menu, but of course, done in a very refine manner.

Crispy Lamb and Onion Croquette, Salsa Verde and Dandelion
Roast Cod, Garlic Crumb, Salsify, Sea Vegetables and Red Wine Sauce
Potato Dauphinoise & Chips and Truffle Mayonnaise

For my starter, I opted for the crispy lamb and onion croquette with salsa verde, it was crispy with some very moist meat in the middle but lacked a little of the wow factor, it was a decent dish but I was expecting a little more. However, I was in love with the duck main course, it was cooked pink with the perfect seasoning, such a pure sensation and could easily be a 2 Michelin stars dish. Everything just worked in perfect harmony on the plate, form the bitter red cabbage to the rich and savoury taste of the chestnut and bacon sauce. The other main of roast cod was also spectacular, the classic use of garlic and red wine delivered tones of robust flavours while the refreshing taste of the salsify offered a fine balance to the overall finish.
Creedy Carver Duck, Red Cabbage, Chestnut and Bacon Sauce
Baked Chocolate Ganache
Maple and Pecan Pie, Stem Ginger Ice Cream and Lime

Apart from my starter, all the dishes were expertly executed and the meal was very enjoyable. All in all, The Royal Pub is everything that a top gastropub should be, humble service, warm atmosphere, and high-quality food. On top of that, the dish portion at The Royal Oak is rather large so it is great value for money if you are a big eater! This is one of that gastropub I would love to return in the near future.
