Modern British fine dining, Chelsea vibe

This happened to be my 5th time visiting The Five Fields. The Michelin-starred British restaurant in Chelsea is a cozy little fine-dining restaurant just off Sloane Square, it held the No1 spot on Tripadvisor London once and booking a table was almost impossible. These days, the hype has moved on but the quality of the cooking remains, and to be honest, I prefer places that do good food don't get over the the top media hype as otherwise it will be flooded with tourists. These days, it only offers a no-choice tasting menu. So it might be a place to visit if you are a picky eater.

Celeriac, oyster, pine |

Dover sole, courgettes |

Grouse, offals, mushrooms |
The in-season game dish was the grouse breast, wrapped with mushrooms and cooked just right. The meat was very tender, and the gammy note of the offal wasn't too overwhelming. The richness and boldness of the dish was great for the Autumn period. The apple tart appeared to be simple, but the taste was spot on, the flour aroma of the camomile offered a fresh touch. The sweet and sour note of the apple had the perfect balance, and the pastry work was also excellent. It didn't offer any wow factor but the taste wise was wonderful.

I found Five Fields has changed a lot compared to when it was first launched almost 10 years ago. It has toned down the technical application in its cooking, and presentation or creativity seems less than in the early days. I recall Five Field was so cutting edge back then and was turning out some innovative dishes. Now it has a more 'safe' feel turning out modern British fine dining cuisine instead. The quality of the cooking and the taste are still very enjoyable these days, but I do miss the ambition it used to have.
