Not your usual Hotel French food

There are plenty of great French restaurants in London, from the classic Otto to creative venues such as Bibendum. However, these places would easily set you back well over £150 if not more. I found it hard to find anything that is less than £100 for a 3-course meal while the quality is close to a Michelin star level. The Midland is one of those rare places that I feel does the job. The beautiful setting within St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and some of the most comfortable chairs have turned this place's decor into one of the finest in London.

Lemon and butter Dover sole |
For my 3rd visit, I revisited a few classics which made me fall in love with Midland in the first place. The crab on toast had such a beautiful shellfish taste, sweet, fresh, and buttery, along with a crispy hash at the base to take in all the flavours. The main of Dover sole meunière, as far as a Dover sole, you cant really get better than that with such a remarkable balance of butter and lemon. The fish itself was cooked just right, smooth and buttery. The dessert of baked Alaska contained layers of chocolate and blackberry ice cream, well crafted and not overly sweet.

The Midland has slowly become my top French restaurant in London. Solid cooking with powerful flavours, and an amazing interior to go with the food. it is hard not to love this place. Yes, there are Michelin-starred places that do better French food, but what I enjoy about this place is while it is in such a classy setting, it is also very casual with no overly fancy elements or strange creative concepts attached. It's simply good food, in such an ace setting.
