Refined Shanghainese cuisine in Hong Kong
Stemmed crab sticky rice, wrapped in lotus leaf |
I rarely return to a restaurant in Hong Kong as I have limited time and there are so many restaurants on my wish list, so unless it is amazing value for money or exceptional in taste, I would not bother. Jardin de Jade, the 1 Michelin starred Shanghainese restaurant fits the bill for me, I got nothing but love for Shanghainese food, and I really enjoyed my first encounter at Jardin de Jade, not to mention the price is not all that expensive for a high-end restaurant in one of the most prestige districts in Hong Kong. For my second visit, I went in a large group and had the chance to sample most of its signature dishes on the menu.
Smoked jasmine tea egg |
BBQ pork in first draw soy sauce |
Xiao long bao |
Freshwater prawns with peas |
The classic xiao long bao was fantastic, the richness of the soup was just right, as was the seasoning of the pork filling, I can easily eat a whole basket by myself. The jasmine tea smoked egg was a simple looking dish but packed with lovely smoky and woody aroma, and the yolk was so moist. The freshwater prawns with honey peas was a refreshing dish, very light but yet full of wonderful sweet umami flavours. The star dish on the night was the stemmed crab sticky rice, wrapped in lotus leaf. The brown crab meat blended into the rice like a rich gravy, along with the dried shrimps, mushrooms and pork, powerful in taste with the lotus leaf offered a hint of grassy aroma, this is the perfect Chinese winter dish.
Whole crispy skin chicken |
Shanghainese lion's head meatballs |
Roasted beef rib in peppercorn |
Shanghainese wok fried noodles |
Jardin de Jade delivered yet another outstanding meal, the cooking was all about fuss-free presentation, big flavours with a touch of refinement. As far as Shanghainese cuisine, I would rate Jardin de Jade is the best in Hong Kong. The service was top notch, besides the friendliness, our waiter showcased great knowledge in the menu and made some fantastic recommendation, never tried to upsell either. To sum it up, a great value for money Shanghainese high-end restaurant, a must try if you ever travel to Hong Kong.
