Peking Garden

Fine Beijing cuisine in Hong Kong

Peking Garden

I am a massive fan of Beijing cuisine, besides the famous Peking Duck, there are plenty more exciting dishes from the capital of China. Beijing cuisine is all about rich taste with the use of top fresh ingredients, as it has greatly influenced by the Chinese imperial cuisine; the empire's kitchen for the royal family, which was also based in Beijing. Peking Garden was open in 1978, renown for its popular Peking duck and is now a household name in Hong Kong, loved by the locals and many rated as one of the best restaurants in Hong Kong. It has since expanded into a mini-chain, the flagship store in Central is located within the luxury Alexandra House shopping mall, and it has been awarded a Michelin star for 3 years since 2016.

The Peking duck is a must try at Peking Garden, the waiter would provide trolly service and carve the duck in front of you. The duck was loaded with so many flavours from the malt sugar and spices, worked like a treat in a wrap with the coolness of the cucumber and the bold taste of the hoisin sauce. The braised ham with honey was a much more subtle dish, slow-cooked aged ham finished in a pool of honey, it was served with a steamed bun which you can consume like a sandwich. Personally, I found the bun was unnecessary. The wok fried beef with scallion had a bags of wok and smoky aroma, along with some very edgy and sharp taste from the scallion, this is classic wok style dish at its best.

Mango and coconut sweet soup with mango ice cream

To sum it up, Peking Garden does indeed offer some really fantastic Beijing style dishes. The presentation was fairly good as far as from the Chinese cuisine point of view, the portion size was also very decent, more than enough for 8-10 people for sharing. Without a doubt, there are other top Beijing restaurants such as Spring Deer and Tai Fung Lau, but Peking Garden is far more refine and less rustic, along with better services, as it is a fine dining restaurant at the end of the day.
