Kym's

Cantonese casual dining in the City

Iberico Pork Char Sui

Andrew Wong is easily the most famous Chinese chef in London right now, since his first restaurant: A Wong, was awarded a Michelin star, his profile has skyrocketed to a new high status. He recently just opened his 2nd restaurant Kym's, located in the city and market it as a much more laid back, Cantonese style restaurant. The menu is fairly short for a Chinese restaurant, with only about 20 dishes to pick from if not including side dishes. The big focus here is the Cantonese meat dishes, the classic soy poached chicken, roasted pork belly and BBQ honey pork.

Pork Skewers, Oyster Sauce, Coconut
Sweet & Sour Pork Ribs
Spring Roll, Mung Bean Noodle, Shiitake

I kicked off my meal with some small plates to share, the pork Skewers were solid, well seasoned and the use of oyster sauce really uplifted the richness of the pork, while the coconut and peanuts elements added a touch of Thai essence. The best dish for me was the silken tofu with century Egg and garlic soy, the tofu was so smooth and it was loaded with lovely umami flavours and a spicy undertone. The slow poached soy chicken was by far the worst dish of the day, the meat was clearly overcooked and it was very dry, almost chewy, a rocky mistake indeed. The pork belly was finely seasoned, but the skin was not as crispy as it should be, and quality wise is not too far off from what you can get in Four Seasons in China Town, but at a much higher price.

I went within the first month of the opening, so I wonder if that is the reason that it wasn't matching to my expectation. Kym's, on paper, is a great concept, but execution-wise was far from anything special. The restaurant already got so many fantastic reviews from the leading food critics so I wonder if I have gone on an off day. The service was decent enough on the day, far better than any of the restaurants in China Town so that was at least a positive sight.
