China Tang London

Comfort Chinese food at its best

Pumpkin rice

Located inside the luxury 5 stars Dorchester Hotel in Mayfair, China Tang is a classic Chinese restaurant, headed up by the talented head chef Fong. If you are looking for stunning presentations or creative concepts in Chinese cuisine, this is not the place to you. China Tang is all about good old fashioned Cantonese food, with a few regional classics along the way, such as Peaking duck and braised tofu. I have been to China Tang more than 7 times now and slowly managed to try most of its dishes from its a la carte menu. However, chef Fong provides seasonal special every once a while so I got the chance to try some exciting new dishes for my 8th visit.

Fish balls and seaweed soup
Salt and pepper eel belly
Pork ribs with plum and vinegar

The dish that caught my eye was the pork ribs cooked in Chinese vinegar and plum, a classic Chinese that is hard to find in the UK. The China Tang version had a balance of sweetness and savoury tone. The meat absorbed all the glories richness and it was comfort food at its best. Another really wonderful dish from the special menu was the salt and pepper eel belly, the eel was rich and creamy, the sharpness of the white pepper worked well with the oily profile of the eel, it was an instant upgrade to your usual sat and pepper squid. The showstopper dish from the meal was the red king crab and pumpkin rice, the freshness of the crab, along with the small hint of smokiness from the rice, worked like a treat with the finely seasoned pumpkin.

Steamed prawns with soy and ginger
Grilled lamb chops with deep fried asparagus
King crab egg fried rice with pumpkin in squash

For my 8th visits, I tried dishes that were new and exciting, and all of the dishes still stayed true to the essence of Chinese cooking, and that is what China Tang is all about. Another thing that really makes the restaurant special is its decor and atmosphere, I got nothing but love for the art deco design of the space. I had a very enjoyable experience and I would love to return again when chef Fong has more new dishes ready, having said that, the usual dishes are still awesome and I know where to go whenever I seek a good quality classic Chinese meal.
