Cantonese feasting
Peking duck |
Haven eaten at Duddell's five times, I have slowly managing to eat through the whole menu. The Cantonese fine dining restaurant has a slick interior design inside a former church, and it's contemporary Chinese cooking are some of the finest you can find in London. For my sixth visit, head chef Chris Tan has provided a special menu for my table, offering some classic Cantonese dishes with a touch of his personal adaptation, based on a recent trip to Hong Kong. Classic Cantonese cooking, but done in a refined manner, is not easy to find in London so I was really excited about what chef Chris has got in store.

The capital lamb chops was a modern take on the capital pork ribs. The lamb was so tender and came off the bones like butter. The sweet and sour balance was perfect, the fruitiness of the sauce worked surprisingly well with the lamb meat. The typhoon shelter lobster, a twist of the classic Hong Kong typhoon shelter crab but replaced with lobster was another really top dish. I really enjoyed the bold taste of the garlic, almond and black bean crumbs, really robust and aromatic, which uplifted the sweetness of the lobster. Last but not least was an egg fried rice that cooked with wind-dried sausages, the smoky aroma was not too intense and I really enjoyed the sausages which offered both umami and sweetness to the rice.

My sixth visit at Duddell's offered me something totally new, the cooking was generally at a high level and I have managed to taste dishes that are hard or not possible to find elsewhere in other London Chinese restaurants. While the dishes were not totally authentic Chinese, it does retain the essence and character of fine Chinese cuisine, all done in a refined, flavoursome manner. Dining at Duddell's is not a cheap affair, however, you are getting top-notch Chinese food, with great service and fine surrounding to match.
