Grill at the Rooftop

My 5th time visiting The Grill at the Dorchester and is a bittersweet visit for sure. After months of lockdown, it was a relief to be able to dine out again, and given at the time of writing, indoor dining is still not possible, Dorchester came up with a brilliant idea of using its rooftop to create a pop-up dining space. The top floor of the hotel offers a stunning view of Hype Park, dining there while watching the sunset made an excellent occasion for a weekend treat. Unlike the standard Grill menu, head chef Tom came up with a more casual, sharing menu with plenty of dishes cooked on the BBQ.

Turbot, peas, lemon |
The raw mackerel with blood orange is the kind type of dish you would enjoy on a summer day. The fresh, oily, and meaty profile of the mackerel was balanced off wonderfully with the bitterness of the blood orange and seaweed, it was a dish that packed with bold and fresh flavours. The grilled turbot was moist and with a beautiful natural sweetness. The pea and lemon sauce added freshness and sourness which worked well with the fish. The star dish was without a doubt the grilled Iberico pork chop, it was seasoned perfectly and super tender. The smoky aroma further enhanced the richness of the meat, with just a hint of crispness on the surface, it was sensational.

Overall, as expected, my meal at The Grill pop-up was fantastic, the dishes were more simple than the standard Grill menu, but it was just as good, if not better. The ingredients are of great quality, and I really enjoyed the sauces from the kitchen, all blended in harmony with the main ingredients, with everything well-balanced while offering a great depth of flavours. I think it was a shocker that the Michelin guide overlooked it for awarding a star, as the standard of the food from The Grill is easily at 1-star level for me. I am looking forward to returning in the near future.
