Sushi Kamon

Omakase, casual sushi style

Raw fish selection for the omakase

Fine quality sushi is hard to come by in London. Back in Japan, a high-end sushi restaurant would normally host no more than 10 people per seating, with a chef offering a set menu (omakase) to the guests, with everything created in front of the guests, and is considered a luxury experience in Japanese culture. In London, there are less than 5 sushi bars that offer something similar, but all at a sky-high price north of £100 per person easily. Opened by the Yashin restaurant group, Sushi Kamon is somewhat operating against the trend of having a sushi bar inside a food court, in an informal manner and a set menu at £45 for 10 sushi.

Salmon with soy

The eel roll was somewhat unusual, with a piece of deep-fried seaweed wrapping around a tempura eel fillet. I enjoyed the sweet soy element which worked well with an oily fish-like eel, it was well seasoned with a small touch of the wasabi and offered freshness. The salmon sushi was perhaps the most underwhelming, fairy average, and lacked taste compare to other sushi on the day. In contrast, the last sushi was the best one of the lot, a piece of fatty tuna that was smoked and cured in soy and garlic. It had a sensational melting texture, very filling and packed with bold umami taste, what a great ending it was.

You might wonder if at such a low price for a standard omakase sushi experience is too good to be true. But turned out it was a really enjoyable dinner for me. With the network and buying power of Yashin, it is able to source some really fine ingredients such as the Spanish fatty tuna and able to price it reasonably to customers. The take on the sushi is not as authentic, with some elements of western fusion, such as the use of smoke and addition of truffle, but overall the flavour was excellent, this place is a good gateway to sample your first omakase experience.
