Hakkasan Hanway Place

The OG London Chinese fine dining den

Smoked Jasmine beef rib

It is fair to say Hakkasan is the OG who started a Chinese fine dining trend in the early 2000s. Back in the day for most people in the UK, Chinese cuisine is all about your local takeaway or traditional Chinese joints in Chinatown. Hakkaasan injected a modern, refined vibe with top-class food, and it is now more of a lifestyle brand instead of a restaurant brand. The last time I dined at Hakkasan was before Covid and I wonder if much has changed since.

Roasted duck in truffle and mushroom sauce

My no1 dish at Hakkasan without a doubt is the Cantonese roasted duck truffle and mushrooms sauce. The quality of the duck was as good as I recalled, the duck's fat was removed from the skin before placing it back on top of a pile of deboned meat, cooked to perfection with fine crispy skin. Another classic of the place is the smoked Jasmine beef ribs, the meat was super tender, well seasoned with a lovely woody tone, and really enjoyable. The dessert of 'Koko Kanu' was a let down however, it looked amazing but the chocolate shell was too hard and the yuzu granita flavour was overwhelmed by the coconut puree.

Besides the dessert, I would rate my 5th visit to Hakkasan is the best to date yet. I am aware it is no longer a Michelin-starred restaurant but all the classic Hakkasan dishes were lovely and I totally understand those dishes remained on the menu for a reason. It is the newer dishes that I had a question mark as they appear to look like Western dishes instead of Chinese dishes. The price point is also scary with most dishes costing the £50 mark, for sure dining at Hakkasan is for a special occasion unless you are loaded.
