Galvin Bistrot

Classic for a reason

Chorizo croquettes

I have been to the Michelin-starred Galvin la Chapelle a few times over the last few years, and somehow kept missing its sister joint Galvin Bistrot which is just next door to it. Unlike La Chapelle, Galvin Bistrot is a relaxing, casual French restaurant in the Bistro mood. What you see is what you get, no creativity or edgy concept, it just turns out classic French dishes in a refined manner, in a short alc menu format. Which sometimes is just what I appreciate, as when you dine with friends who are not overly keen on long hours tasting menu format and on a budget, French Bistro is always a great solution.

Beef tartar

Tarte flambee

1kg chateaubriand in peppercorn sauce

The house special starter is a tarte flambee, a flatbread that contained crème fraîche and onions, that combo was simply magical as the soft sour tone worked well to balance off the richness of the bacon. My main roasted lamb rump was excellent, cooked pink as it should be and well seasoned, the classic combo of baby carrots and board beans garnishes matched the lamb well, it was a faultless lamb dish. I also got a chance to try its daily special, a giant piece of chateaubriand dressed in peppercorn sauce. The meat was simply sensational, with a soft tender texture and rich dry-aged meaty flavour.

There were no fireworks from Galvin Bistrot, but the food offering was simply very enjoyable with good flavours delivered. It has the ability to turn classic French dishes into something so appealing and not inviting, while not overly rich at the same time. Crazy to say that, not many French restaurants in London get that balance right. Our server on the day was also excellent, he was so warming and caring to make the meal so much more memorable. La Chapelle might have the star, but Bistrot is just as special in my view when you are looking for some refined comforting French food in Lonon.
