Osteria Angelina

 Italian‑Japanese Fusion with Flair

Tomato and seaweed salad

Osteria Angelina
, the latest outpost from the team behind Dalston’s acclaimed Angelina, takes root in Shoreditch with a bold promise: to fuse the soul of an Italian osteria with the precision and umami‑rich palette of Japanese cooking, tucked inside a restored Victorian warehouse just off Norton Folgate. Where the original Angelina offered tightly curated tasting menus, this Shoreditch sibling widens the lens with a more expansive à la carte menu, inviting guests to build their own journey through small plates, handmade pastas, and grilled mains.

For mains, the binchō‑tan grill shines: the skate wing lacquered with sea urchin butter, it was cooked just right. I enjoyed the smoky and buttery surface of the fish; the addition of the classic capers acted as a great seasoning, creamy and rich. Even better was the pork chop glazed in miso, tender meat and crispy skin, not easy to get right at all, especially in pork meat. The only thing that I wasn't a fan of was the fries; it was loaded with so much oil and felt like eating solid oil at times.

Osteria Angelina feels like a place built for conversation—between Italian and Japanese flavors, between Shoreditch trendsetters and City workers, between the comfort of an osteria and the precision of a fine‑dining workshop. Beside the fires, if there is a flaw, it lies in the seating; the backrests, too reclined for extended comfort, make long meals feel less leisurely than they should. This is not a restaurant for those seeking quiet, purist Italian cooking—it is for the curious. Like its Dalston sibling, Osteria Angelina thrives on creative tension: East meets West, classic meets contemporary, trattoria soul meets Shoreditch swagger.
