Red braised beef tendon noodles |
Beef noodles is a must-try item for anyone visiting Taiwan, but there are so many beef noodles joint, it is hard to pick the right one. Yonkang is a classic Taiwanese beef noodles restaurant in central Taipei, it is somewhat iconic with long waits in every lunch and dinner hours. Since the Michelin guide entered Taipei, it is also one of the few casual noodles restaurants that have been awarded a Bib Gourmand, taking the popularity to the next level.
Yongkang Beef Noodles |
Steamed pork ribs with rice |
Yongkang is known for its red braised beef noodles and that what I opted for, the beef soup contained a rich depth of garlic, chili and tomato flavours, the robust and impactful taste was perhaps a bit too powerful for my liking. What I did enjoy was the well-executed beef tendon, with a hard jelly liked texture, really smooth and the soup acted as a great seasoning. I also got the chance to try a side dish, the steamed chilled pork ribs, it also came with rice and had a mixture of tomato and chili flavours.

The style of Yongkang was too robust for my liking, it was decent enough and I can understand why it is so popular places thanks to its crazy rich flavours, just not for me. It is best to come just before 12 noon to ensure you don't need to wait as it is an extremely popular venue. You would be offered a limited menu in English if you don't speak Chinese, as none of the waiting staff understand any English, this means you will have a much smaller choice if you can't speak Chinese.
