Jordi Cruz's rising star

Angle is located in the heart of Barcelona. Part of the luxury hospitality group Abac, it is the newest Michelin two-starred restaurant in the city, having got promoted in the 2020 guide. The chef behind Angle is a Spanish culinary heavyweight, Jordi Cruz. The talented chef is one of the youngest ever chefs to reach 3 Michelin star status in the world, his flagship restaurant Abac, which is not far away from Angle, is one of the only two 3 starred restaurants in Barcelona. Jordi is renowned for his cutting edge, creative approach in fine dining, taking inspirations from around the world. At Angle, he only offers two tasting menu, just like at Abac.

Catalan style Maresme peas |
The Angle experience kicked off at the reception floor, where guests would be offered a glass of wine while enjoying some snacks before taken to the main dining room space. The squid niguiri was fantastic, the rice was replaced with cured squid, with a piece of grilled tuna skin. It was buttery rich with a sharp taste thanks to freshly grated local wasabi. The scarlet shrimp bouillabaisse was perhaps the best dish of the meal, a handful of shrimps were boiled to extract the intense seafood flavours, together with the anise and saffron. The dish also came with a giant grilled shrimp head which seated on a salt rock. It had a melting umami taste which was heavenly. The main course was Jordi's take on beef Wellington, which was actually beef tartar served tableside with fried capers and truffle. It was interesting enough but perhaps not as a main course worthy dish.

There is a lot to love about Angle, the food quality was generally really top-notch, with some creative and fun elements in the mix. However, the meal was far from perfect. the welcome snack experience was confusing as the snack tasting station was right next to the front door and only has enough space for 4 people at a time, which means many diners were left waiting at the reception area for a while. The service was also not good as it could be, I felt they lacked passion and warmth generally. Based on the food alone, It was fantastic for sure, and I can understand why it was promoted to 2 stars level.
