The Grill at The Dorchester

British cuisine master

Beef tartare on crumpet and black truffle

The Grill at The Dorchester has a special place in my heart. The slick modern British hotel restaurant is one of those places I always have time for, always willing to head back. All down to the chef behind it aka Tom Booton, who has turned British cuisine into something exciting and fun, while maintaining the essence of traditional British manner. It has just updated its menu for winter so for my 10th visit, I was able to sample all the new dishes. The menu contains snack, starter, main, and dessert sessions so you can more or less treat it as a 4-course alc menu.

Ham hock sausage rolls and fried mushrooms

Lamb belly, peppercorn

Scotch egg, mint yoghurt and Nudja

I went full-on winter beast mode and ordered a lot to share between two, the lamb belly skewer snack was really special I got to say, the rich buttery taste with a soft charred undertone was such a winning combo, and that mild savoury peppercorn glaze turned it into perhaps the best lamb kebab in London. The showstopper sharing main was a lobster dish with such a knocked-out caviar and shellfish sauce. The rich seafood aroma from the sauce as really something, and the Cornish lobster was cooked to perfection, and worked remarkably with the garnishes of cep mushrooms and pumpkin, it was indeed a really outstanding winter dish.

Crab, apple, caviar

Lobster, pumpkin, cep, caviar

Mince pie soft serve

My latest visit to The Grill was as wonderful as I expected, I really enjoyed how Tom kept on pushing for new ideas without just dishing out the same thing 365 days which is all too often in many hotel restaurants. When a chef knows how to decide a menu based on what is in season and mix it with his flair while paying respect to tradition, you can't really go wrong with that. For sure I will be visiting The Grill again come 2024, this is the best none Michelin-starred yet Michelin-level restaurant in London.
