Allegra

The king of Stratford

Roasted duck, blackberries, beetroot

This is my 3rd time dining at Allegra, the modern fine dining restaurant is located on the 7th floor of the Stratford Hotel. I am a fan of Executive Chef Patrick Powell's style of cooking. Having eaten at his latest project (which was very enjoyable), aka a French restaurant called The Midland in King Cross, it reminded me he also has an excellent venue which is even closer to me, which is Allegra. Unlike The Midland, Allegra has a much more international essence in its approach it its food offering, which leads to more creative, forward-thinking dishes.

Roasted scallop, shellfish sauce, carrot
Grilled potato bread, crab sauce, lemon
Tagliatelle, lobster, fennel

The roasted scallop had a sweet, buttery sauce from a mixture of carrot shellfish. The scallop was cooked to perfection, and I had no issue with it. For the main event, I had a whole roasted duck which had a really wonderful spice rub and had a winter vibe written all over it. The duck breast was cooked wonderfully, and very tender, and the garnishes were just as good, the bitter-sweet, fruity taste of the berries and beetroot matched up perfectly. It also came with duck legs and liver kebab, it had a bold and rich meaty taste but not overwhelmingly strong, the addition of a yogurt sauce acted as a great balance to offer a hint of sour note and freshness.

Chicken, romesco, onion

Apple tart tatin

It has been a while since I last visited Allegra, and the standard has been maintained compared to my last 2 visits. It did cross my mind with Patrick's main focus now being in the Midland, I wonder if the quality would drop off but that wasn't the case. The price is very reasonable. For such quality cuisine charging the mid £20 mark for a main course, it is super value for money as far as London standard. This place is easily the best restaurant in Stratford.
