Basque cuisine in London

Basque cuisine is perhaps the best European cuisine for me, but it is rare to find a good place in London that can do well. Despite Lurra being launched more than 9 years ago, I have yet to visit despite the appealing menu. Lurra's menu is a celebration of Basque cuisine, with a focus on grilled meats. The highlight of the meal is undoubtedly the Spanish rib steaks, a succulent Galician steak from old aged cows that are cooked over a wood-fired grill. For my visit with a large group, I was able to order most items on the menu.

The 1.4kg dry-aged Cornish wild turbot was grilled well with a soft smooth texture, but perhaps a little heavy on the seasoning and I would prefer it had more olive oil. Without a doubt, the Galician bone-in ribeye was the star of the show. It was rich, bold, and packed with such a strong beef taste yet very tender at the same time. The charred surface was just perfect with a hint of smokiness. Just when I thought it couldn't get better, I found the Basque cheesecake at Lurra was truly outstanding, with a soft melting texture yet a wonderful burnt crisp surface and so rich in cream cheese taste, I would rate it even a notch above the infamous La Vina cheesecake back in San Sebastian. |

While Lurra is on the pricier side, the quality of the food and the overall dining experience justify the cost, as the ingredients are of the highest quality and rare in the UK. Lurra is a true gem in London's dining scene. Its Basque cuisine, while not always truly authentic, does deliver some lovely flavours and I enjoyed its simplicity, what you see is what you get. Whether you're a local or a visitor, Lurra offers a dining experience that is both satisfying and memorable.
