Shoreditch sky dining
Urban Coterie |
So, it appears M by Montcalm and the Searcys group isn't settling with just one top restaurant (Tonic & Remedy) inside the 5 star hotel located just off Old Street station, it just recently added another restaurant: Urban Coterie to its rank, which is located on the 17th floor with a fine view of East London. It is a modern British restaurant that in partnership with Anthony Demetre, who is also chef patron of 1 Michelin starred Wild Honey and Arbutus. Martin Zahumensky was appointed head chef (Texture and Hibiscus), with such an impressive of CVs, my expectation was high.
Bread |
Brixham crab, apple, celeriac |
Roast scallop and dumpling, XO sauce |
My starter was questionable, the roast scallop was a touch overcooked and while the dumpling added a creative smooth texture to the dish, by itself was rather bland and I would expect a bit more intense flavours from the XO sauce. The monkfish was cooked to perfection, the meaty texture worked so brilliantly with the cockles, it had great seasoning without losing the natural sweetness of the fish. A grilled piece of beef was another masterfully executed plate of food, the meat so tender and blessed with a great depth of richness and boldness, with just a small pleasant hint of earthiness added from the ceps and artichoke, it was a faultless dish for me.
Crosnes with roasted onion |
Monkfish, cockles, coco beans, hispi cabbage |
Grilled piece of beef, ceps, Jerusalem artichoke |
While the starters were pretty average, both the main courses were truly fantastic,These are the kind of dishes I just absolutely adored, without a question they were Michelin standard for me. Urban Coterie also has a cocktail bar with a large collection of spirit and cocktails choices to make it a great spot for a "cocktail in the sky" experience. I had a 50% soft launch offer, a normal 3 course meal would set you back about £45 per person, but that is the kind of price I would very much happy to pay for providing if all the dishes can achieve the same level of quality of my mains. Overall, a great modern restaurant with a lovely setting, the Shoreditch dining scene just got more exciting.
