Part of the mighty Hakkasan empire, Yauatcha is a dim sum restaurant concept that gained success when it was first launched in Soho more than 10 years ago. These days, it has over 10 sites across the world, Yauatcha City is the second site in the UK. The menu is mostly based on Cantonese dim sum, just like in many other classic Chinese restaurants, you will find steam, bake and deep fry dim sum, along with some wok based and stir fry dishes. However, Yauatcha has a strong brand identity with a modern and edgy decor to match, along with some signature dishes that itself become a classic, with many other Chinese restaurants trying to copy.

For my visit, I kicked off with a few dim sum. The signature venison puff was as good as it was when I have first experienced in the Soho site many years ago. Robust in taste with a sensational black pepper aroma and a mild spicy kick, the pasty itself was baked to perfection too. The prawn and bean curd cheung fun was another shining dish, it was cooked to the perfect level, the crispy bean curd was wrapped with a layer of soft rice roll. The prawn itself was well seasoned, it was cheung fun at such a refined level. The weakest dish of the meal was the jasmine tea smoked ribs, while the surface of the ribs was packed with lovely sweet, smoky and savory taste, the flavor failed to reach beyond the surface.

Yauatcha City was enjoyable, it was top notch dim sum at a level that is well above your average Chinese restaurants in China Town. What is so great about Yauatcha is the modern setting and interior design, along with a good range of wine, creative cocktails, and desserts, all of these are what many other Chinese restaurants lack. To sum it up, Yauatcha offers Chinese dim sum in an edgy, lively setting with decent service to match, great for any dim sum lovers.
