Duck and Rice

Chinese feasting, pub style

Feasting time!

Duck and Rice is one of the most unique Chinese restaurants you would see in the UK, a hybrid of a British pub and Chinese restaurant, Duck and Rice is all about serving premium Chinese cuisine with a fine selection of beer to match, spread across 2 floors. The restaurant also sticks to the true British pub identity, hosting regular bingo and quiz nights. The menu of Duck and Rice offers beyond your typical Chinese restaurants, there are plenty of classic Cantonese dishes, but also some other Asian influenced dishes from the like of Japan, such as gyoza and yakitori.

Pork & prawn shumai
Scallop and taro croquette
Crab meat tofu clay pot

I kicked off my feast with the scallop and taro croquette, it was a creative dim sum that you won't be able to find in a classic Chinese restaurant. It was deep fried to perfection, I really enjoyed the well-seasoned taro filling, that wrapped around a whole sweet scallop. The curry soft shell crab was another crowd pleaser, the batter was well executed, and the crab itself was still moist on the inside. A plate of the crab with a bowl of plain rice can be a delicious meal on its own. I was really happy to find a fu-yee dish on the menu, which is a type of Chinese fermented bean curd that is not widely available in the UK. It was cooked in a pot with mock duck (made with wheat gluten), carrots and glass noodles. It had a lovely sweet soy aroma, it was a rich and comforting dish.

Vegetable yakisoba

My feast at Duck and Rice was a real delight, it was classic Cantonese dishes well done with some modern adaptation that take Chinese flavours to the next level. The service quality is well beyond your typical pub or Chinese restaurants. The relaxing pub-style setting also makes the venue such a top place for catching up for friends or for a drop in if you fancy a pint of beer with some top-notch Chinese food.
