New Fortune Cookie

Old school Cantonese joint

Stir fry ginger and spring onions lobster with noodles

Queensway London is my secret location for affordable and quality Chinese food, while Chinatown is great and you are flooded with so many choices, I personally found the Cantonese restaurants in Queensway are a touch better and cheaper at the same time! The most affordable joint there is without a doubt New Fortune Cookie, and the restaurant is all about traditional Cantonese dishes, it has a special 'Chinese menu' that contain dishes more catered for the local Chinese as it contains dishes that some locals might find it a bit too much, such as roasted pigeon and pig intestine.

The honeycomb beef tripe stew was a great winter dish, its peppery and soybean tone offered such a rich depth of umami taste, and the tripe itself had a very pleasant rubbery and smooth texture, similar to the sea cucumber. Pan-fried silver cod is another classic that is not easy to find, the fish was flaky and buttery, with a nice crispy ring of cod skin, it became a world-beater when topped with a sweet seasoned soy sauce. The good old-fashioned stir fry lobster noodles were hard to fault. The chef cooked the lobster to the perfect temperature, very moist. The ginger and spring onions, together with the smoky wok and lobster element, made the noodles extremely flavoursome.

New Fortune Cookie captured the essence of Cantonese cooking, and I very much appreciate it contains some lovely old-school Cantonese dishes that are slowly dying out in London, done to the traditional manner. By no means it is world-class or using the finest ingredients, but from value for money pov, with most dishes costing around the 10-pound mark, I would say New Fortune Cookie is one of the very best in London has on offer.
