Imperial Treasure Fine Chinese Cuisine London

Chinese New Year special

Soy braised pork belly stew with abalone and fat choy

Chinese New Year is when many Chinese restaurants would come up with a special menu, dishes associated with blessing and wisdom that would give diners a feel-good factor. Imperial Treasure's Chinese New Year has gone big, with 14 new dishes making up its Chinese New Year special, as well as a tasting menu that contains most of the new dishes. I always enjoy Imperial Treasure dim sum and its traditional approach to Cantonese cuisine, so I was really excited to try out its selection of new dishes to embrace the Chinese New Year vibe.

Slow-cooked beef ribs

Wind-dried sausage and dried oyster glutenous rice

Sliver cod steamed in soy and bean paste

The steamed sliver cod was a steam dish at its best, the fish was super buttery and smooth, with a ginger and soybean paste that lifted up the freshness to another level. I could not fault it. What I enjoyed the most was the 'Dong Pao' pork, a traditional Shanghainese dish that required slow-cooking pork belly in spices and soy. The meat was super soft and absorbed all the wonderful heavenly spices and the umami taste of the sauce. The abalone which came with the pork was also super tender, and the bun that came with it was perfect to scoop up all the rich sauce. Less impressive was the prawns wok fried in sweet vinegar, it lacked that savory edge I was hoping for and at £38 for a few prawns, it wasn't really worth it.

Wok fried prawns in sweet vinegar and honey

Salted egg yolk custard bun and osmanthus jelly

Baked egg tart

It was good to try so many new dishes for my 9th visit to Imperial Treasure, I got to admit I am getting tired of the standard menu as it hardly changes at all. Some of the new dishes were really outstanding, and it retains all the hallmark of traditional Chinese taste. Price is pretty scary however at Imperial Treasure, with most dishes costing around the £50 mark. Best to come with a few to share to save cost and reserve for special occasions only. If you want a more budget affair, come here for lunch and order from its dim sum menu, also solid and better than anything you can find in China Town.
