Classy hotel French dining

House salad, French fries and John Dorey |
The Midland Grand is a brand-new restaurant within the stunning-looking, Renaissance Hotel in King Cross. The same space used to be The Gibert Scott by Marcus Wreaing, where I had a very average meal before Covid. So when the news that the super talented chef Patrick Powell (who also heads up Allegra where I had 2 great meals) has taken over and the whole space got a revamp, I was excited to see what has changed, the concept is all about fine dining French cuisine, but in a casual, creative manner.

Snails bourguignon, Pomme Paillasson |
For my starter, I opted for the crab toast which looked nothing like crab toast, instead, it was a good load of fresh crab sitting on a hashbrown, swimming in a pool of brown crab soup that was packed with so much powerful taste of the crab, it was a rich and delightful plate. The main event of a whole Joh Dorey was a knockout. It was cooked and seasoned to perfection, swimming in a mild curry sauce, every mouthful was a pure sensation. I have nothing but love for it.

The food at The Midland Grand was really impressive considering it is still in its very early days The refinement, the flavour, and the visual all seem spot on at a respectable price given it is within a 5 stars hotel. The service was a little hit-and-miss due to its slow pace, but that is a minor issue since the restaurant just launched. I would be more than happy to return in the near future.
Food 4/5
