Dos Pebrots Barcelona

Historial Mediterranean taste

Cured anchovies 2 ways, 2 years and 48 hours

9 years ago, when I visited Barcelona for the first time, I experience fusion cuisine at Dos Palillos by Albert Raurich. The concept was totally new to me and it really open up my mind to how when using western concepts and fine local ingredients, then applying Asian flavours (when done right), it can turn into something truly interesting and great. Its chef-owner, Albert Raurich has since launched Dos Pebrots, a totally different concept, revisiting the past to recreate classic Mediterranean flavours, just sounds like what is Heston doing with his Dinner by Heston restaurant back in London.

Monkfish foie salad with fennel

Tomato and fatty tuna belly salad

Squid, paprika, hot olive oil

Grilled red prawns and fig

Vitello tonato

I opted for the long-tasting menu to sample the best of Dos Pebrots with 14 dishes. The tomato and tuna salad doesn't sound special or visually appealing but it totally delivered in taste. The fatty tuna had a buttery texture and was well seasoned along with the sweet tomato, it was very refreshing and was perhaps the finest salad I have encountered along with Martin Berasategui's lobster salad. The grilled red prawns with fig were interesting, as once cooked, the fig almost tasted like a fruity aubergine, which worked well with the sweet prawns. What fell off the wheel was the Iberico suckling pig, the skin was chewy instead of crispy, while overly seasoned so it was unpleasant to eat, the only disappointment on the menu.

Lamb kebab, pita bread, yogurt

Iberian suckling pig

Red pepper and roses water pudding

French toast with goat milk ice cream

True to Albert Raurich's identity, Dos Pebrots without a doubt was fun and doing something unusual. Revisiting classic recipes while using top ingredients resulted in some very interesting flavours for sure. The pig dish dragged down the total mark, but overall I did have a really enjoyable time at Dos Pebrots, and all the staff was lovely. Dos Pebrots also has an a la carte menu so is great for anyone who wishes to go back once they get the idea of what Dos Pebrots is all about.
