La Trompette

Chiswick classic

Beets, artichoke, summer leaves

9 years later, I returned to La Trompette once again, I rarely travel to west London but it was always on the back of my mind to one day head back to La Trompette. Located in Chiswick, the French-themed neighbourhood restaurant is sister restaurant to The Glasshouse in Kew Garden, another excellent venue that I have visited lately. The cooking style of La Trompette is based on classic French cuisine with a light modern European touch, nothing too creative or experimental. The 3-course menu format is the same as lunch and dinner, but lunch at a lower price so you will always get better value for money if you come for lunch.

Smoked pork tortelloni, garden pickles, pecorino

Loin of cod, herb gnochetti, peas, mousserons and garden lettuce

Roast Herdwick lamb, potato galette, kohlrabi, garden chard

My starter of suckling pig tortellini was excellent, the pasta layer was thin, soft, and smooth, the pork was super tender and I really enjoyed the spicy peppery tone which worked well as a sauce. The extra touch of hazelnuts and pecorino offered a classic pasta finish and I got to say this is more enjoyable than Gorden Ramsay's legendary lobster ravioli. The roast Herdwick lamb was just as good, well seasoned, and cooked to perfection. The kohlrabi and onion offered a soft sweetness and the lemon and caper enhanced the savoury taste to another level.

Roasted rump, veal, polenta, almonds

Yorkshire rhubarb crumble soufflé

Passion fruit tart, Alfonso mango and makrut lime

La Trompette is a Michelin-starred restaurant for a reason, the cooking was solid with a touch of elegance, combing great ingredients to create great flavours using the classic French cooking method. While tasting menu with fancy ideas and abstract presentation is fun, sometimes a good old-fashioned 3-course menu is just as enjoyable. It is just a shame when I live lack such quality neighbourhood restaurants, people in Chiswick are lucky to have such a fabulous restaurant.
