Kima

The finest Greek seafood in London?

2.4kg grilled wild Cornish turbot with Greek extra virgin olive oil

I have been on a mission lately to locate restaurants that serve a whole large fish in London, that is not an easy task as many places would only offer fish fillets as seeing a fish head on a dining table can still be offputting for some. After some online research, I came across a Greek restaurant called Kima that is all about seafood, and it has its own fish counter of daily fresh catch which the chef is able to serve in many ways, from raw, fish stew, grilled to steamed etc, this sounds just perfect for me, as cooking a whole fresh fish is no easy task so I was glad to find a place that has such a strong focus in fish cookery. The menu also contains plenty of other seafood items besides whole fish, all cooked in a Greek cuisine manner.

Prawn carabineros ‘giouvetsi’

The fish souvlaki came with a piece of pan-fried seabream and some salsa, all folded in a taco roll so it got some interesting Mexican element. The salsa was fresh and aromatic which accompanied the sea bream really well. The carabineros giouvetsi was a thing of beauty, the tomato and seafood flavour had such a fine balance of umami and refreshing taste at the same time, and I got nothing but love for the lightly cooked carabineros on top, it was so sweet with a creamy texture. The hero of the day without a doubt was a whole 2.4kg wild Cornish turbot, grilled to perfection, with a light seasoning of some really fine Greek olive oil, the fish was meaty, cooked just right and it was turbot cooking at its peak form, I had a few whole turbot dishes in London before but this is the best to date.

Kima was a great discovery and I can't believe it took me a while to find such a high-quality seafood place. Far too often in London, there are restaurants that overcook seafood and season too heavily, that is not the case with Kima, on top of that, it sources some really excellent fishes, from wild seabass, red bream, red mullet, turbot to scorpionfish, and able to cook it in some unusual ways such as in a stew or steaming. Given the ever-changing daily catches of some top-class wild fishes, for sure I would love to return to Kima in the near future.
